I remember having a conversation with one of my good friends who came to the U.S. to study plant pathology. He said this, “It's like I'm not even a human!” He was expressing, quite clearly I might add, what it felt like for a Chinese person to come to the U.S. How could it be so different? Ami and I often marvel at the things that we Americans take for granted yet are done in a different way here. Take tape for example.
The picture above shows a roll of tape from the US. Notice how the arrow points toward the end of the tape where the roll begins. Below is a roll of tape from here. Notice how the arrow points toward the direction that the tape rolls. Both make sense, yet they are the exact opposite approach! After nearly three years, we feel fairly comfortable almost all the time, yet we still find situations like these where this massive society takes a very different approach to a common problem than our passport country.
